Master jeweller at work

Where Passion Meets
Timeless Craftsmanship.

Defoe & Mitchells was founded with a simple belief — that true beauty lies in the details. Each piece we create is a reflection of our dedication to quality, artistry, and timeless design.

From a Single Workshop
to a London Legacy

In 1987, a young goldsmith named Dereck Mitchell opened a small workshop in the heart of Mayfair, London, with nothing more than a set of hand tools, an unwavering passion for craftsmanship, and a dream to create jewellery of extraordinary beauty. Working from a modest bench in a rented studio, Dereck spent his early years perfecting the ancient techniques of goldsmithing — learning the precise art of stone setting, the delicate craft of filigree work, and the patient discipline required to transform raw precious metals into objects of enduring elegance.

In 1992, Dereck was joined by Jean Defoe, a gemologist of exceptional talent whose expertise in sourcing rare and ethically obtained gemstones from the finest origins around the world — including Colombia, Zambia, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania — would prove transformative. Together, Dereck and Jean shared not only a professional vision but a deep personal philosophy: that jewellery should be more than beautiful. It should be meaningful. It should tell a story. It should endure.

From that partnership, Defoe & Mitchells Fine Jewellery was born. The name — a union of their surnames — reflected their equal commitment to the house they were building together. What began as two individuals united by craft and conviction has grown, over nearly four decades, into one of London's most respected names in fine jewellery.

The Visionaries Behind
Every Piece

Dereck Mitchell

Co-Founder & Master Goldsmith

A master goldsmith whose hands have shaped thousands of extraordinary pieces over nearly four decades. Dereck's philosophy is simple: every piece of jewellery should be worthy of becoming a family heirloom. His dedication to traditional goldsmithing techniques — combined with an embrace of contemporary design — defines the distinctive Defoe & Mitchells aesthetic.

Jean Defoe

Co-Founder & Chief Gemologist

A gemologist of rare expertise, Jean has spent her career building relationships with the world's finest ethical gemstone suppliers. Her discerning eye for colour, clarity, and character ensures that every stone selected for a Defoe & Mitchells creation is not merely beautiful, but exceptional — a natural treasure worthy of the craftsmanship that surrounds it.
