It is created — born from a conversation between a client with a vision and a jeweller with the skill to bring that vision to life. At Defoe & Mitchells, our bespoke commission service exists for those who seek something beyond the exceptional: jewellery that is entirely, uniquely their own.
Whether you are marking a milestone that deserves to be remembered forever, searching for a gift of singular meaning, or simply believe — as we do — that the finest jewellery should be as individual as the person who wears it, our bespoke service offers an experience as extraordinary as the piece it creates.
The Bespoke Journey
Every bespoke commission begins with a private consultation — a conversation in which we take the time to truly understand your vision, your story, and the significance of the piece you wish to create. There is no obligation and no pressure. This is simply an opportunity for us to listen, and for you to share.
Following your consultation, our design team will develop a series of concept sketches and, where appropriate, detailed technical drawings that translate your vision into a tangible design. We will present these to you in a second consultation, discussing each element in detail and refining the design until it is exactly as you imagined — or better.
Once the design is agreed, Jean Defoe will personally curate a selection of gemstones that meet the precise requirements of your commission — sourced from our trusted ethical partners around the world. You will be invited to view and handle the stones, learning about their provenance, their qualities, and the story they carry, before making your final selection.
With design confirmed and gemstones selected, your piece enters the hands of our master jewellers. Working entirely by hand in our Mayfair atelier, they will fabricate your piece using the finest precious metals and the techniques that have defined our house for nearly four decades. You are welcome to visit the atelier at agreed stages to see your piece taking shape.
Before your piece is complete, it undergoes our rigorous final quality inspection — every stone checked, every surface examined, every dimension verified. Once approved, your piece is submitted to the London Assay Office for official hallmarking, providing an independent guarantee of the metal's purity and your piece's authenticity.
Your completed piece is presented to you in our signature Defoe & Mitchells box, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, a full description of the gemstones and materials used, and our comprehensive aftercare guide. We also offer a lifetime maintenance service, ensuring that your piece remains as beautiful as the day it was created.
